The Athens Metro

Finally completed in January 2004 in preparation for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games the Athens Metro is the largest and most complex public project to date in Greece and all of Europe.  The 2 lines plus the Athens Piraeus Electric Railway (ISAP) carry approximately 1 million people per day.  This makes the Athens Metro the fastest and most reliable transport which contributes to energy saving, growth in the economy, environmental health and improves the image of Athens.

Since Athens Metro was built the number of overall cars entering Athens has been reduced by 250,000 per day so therefore air pollution has been reduced by 35%

With the use of the Athens Metro people save an average of 50% of their total traveling time.

The Athens Metro network intends to carry Athenians and tourists who will visit Athens for the 2004 Olympic Games.

The Athens Metro also has a direct line from the airport to Syntagma Station

It aims to understand the needs of the passengers with information to make sure people reach their destination on time

Metro stations showcase art created by Greek Artists, as well as house an exhibition of archaeological finds that were discovered during the construction of the Athens Metro.
